In dit boek vindt u een overzicht van de keramieken soepkommen die Susanne Khalil Yusef maakte als onderdeel van het fondsenwervende evenement ‘Heart for Palestine’, dat in 2025 in Amsterdam plaatsvond. Elke soepkom is uniek en opgedragen aan één van de meer dan 400 Palestijnse dorpen die in 1948 door Israël met geweld werden ontvolkt.

Naast elke soepkom wordt een korte beschrijving gegeven van wat er bekend is over het dorp waartoe deze behoort. Bijvoorbeeld hoeveel mensen er kort voor de verwoesting woonden, wat er in het dorp gebeurde en wat er vandaag de dag nog van over is. De decoraties op de soepkommen, die de kunstenares in samenwerking met vrienden en familie die zich met het thema bezighouden heeft gemaakt, worden toegelicht en vertaald.

Fairtrade Palestine en Susanne doneren de volledige opbrengst van deze editie (minus productiekosten) aan het “Noodfonds voor Gaza” van Fairtrade Palestine.

Susanne Khalil Yusef is een Palestijnse kunstenaar, geboren in 1984 in Duitsland bij Palestijns gezin die met oorsprong in Jaffa, Palestina. Op zoek naar een veilige plek om een ​​nieuw leven op te bouwen, woonde ze in verschillende Europese landen voordat ze zich in Nederland vestigden. Yusef studeerde aan de St. Joost kunstacademie ’s Hertogen Bosch, waar ze zowel haar bachelor- als masterdiploma in de beeldende kunst behaalde. Yusef creëert ruimte vullende, kleurrijke installaties door een breed scala aan media te combineren, zoals muurschilderingen, textiel, sculpturen en performancekunst. Hiervoor werkt ze regelmatig samen met vrienden, muzikanten en onderzoekers. Haar werk onderzoekt thema’s als Palestijnse identiteit, gedwongen migratie en koloniaal geweld, waarbij ze put uit onderzoek naar haar familiegeschiedenis en ervaringen in Palestina. Yusef was resident aan de Rijksacademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (2022-2024), haar werk is opgenomen in diverse openbare collecties en in 2025 onthulde ze haar eerste permanente openbare sculptuur in Amsterdam.

In this book you will find an overview of the ceramic soup bowls Susanne Khalil Yusef created as part of the fundraising event ‘Heart for Palestine’, held in Amsterdam in 2025. Each soup bowl is unique and dedicated to one of the more than 400 Palestinian villages that were violently depopulated by Israel during its creation in 1948.

Alongside each soup bowl a small overview is given of what is known about the village it belongs to. For example, how many people lived there shortly before its destruction, what was going on in the village and what is left of it today. The decorations on the soup bowls, which the artist made in collaboration with friends and family that are concerned with the topic, are explained and translated.

Fairtrade Palestine and Susanne will donate all proceeds from this edition (minus production costs) to the the “Noodhulp Gaza” fund from Fairtrade Palestine.

 

About Susanne Khalil Yusef
سوزان الخليل يوسف

Susanne Khalil Yusef is a Palestinian artist born 1984 in Germany to a family of refugees from Jaffa, Palestine. In search of a safe place to build up a life, they have lived across several european countries before settling in the Netherlands. Yusef studied at St. Joost School of Art & Design in ’s Hertogenbosch, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Fine Art. Yusef creates immersive, colorful installations by combining a wide range of media such as murals, textiles, sculptures and performance, for which she regularly collaborates with friends, musicians and researchers. Her work explores themes of Palestinian identity, forced migration, and colonial violence, drawing on research into her family history and experiences she had in Palestine. Yusef was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (2022–2024), her work is held in various public collections; and in 2025 she unveiled her first permanent public sculpture in Amsterdam.

Ceramic Soup Bowls Honoring Over 400 Lost Palestinian Villages

A Mouthful of the People – Voice of Palestine is a moving art book by Palestinian artist Susanne Khalil Yusef. It documents the ceramic soup bowls she created for the Heart for Palestine fundraising event in Amsterdam (2025). Each bowl is dedicated to one of the more than 400 Palestinian villages that were violently depopulated in 1948.

This Palestinian art book combines photography, history, and personal storytelling. It gives a face and a name to places that have been erased from official maps but live on in memory.

About the Artist

Susanne Khalil Yusef (b. 1984, Germany) is a Palestinian visual artist based in the Netherlands. She studied at the St. Joost School of Art & Design and was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Her work explores Palestinian identity, forced migration, and colonial violence through ceramics, textiles, painting, and sculpture.

She has exhibited widely in Europe and the Middle East. Her work is held in private and public collections.
